Diwali Gift Ideas for Kids (That Are Not Just Sweets)
Jay Karn · 6 October 2026 · 3 min read

Diwali is on 8 November this year. Most kids get sweets, chocolates and new clothes. These are nice, but they are over in a day or two.
A good Diwali gift for kids is something they can do or make. It keeps them busy in the holidays. And they have something to show when guests come home.
Here are 6 simple Diwali gift ideas for kids. Most of them are easy to find and do not cost much.
1. A Ganesha painting kit
This is the one we make ourselves, so we will start with it. A Ganesha painting kit has a small white Ganesha statue, colours and a brush. The child paints the statue in any colours they like.
The statue is made of gypsum. Gypsum is also called POP or plaster of Paris. The shape is already made, so the child does not need to know drawing. They only fill in the colours.
When it is dry, you can keep the painted Ganesha on a shelf for Diwali. A child feels proud to see something they made as part of the festival.

2. Diyas to paint
Plain clay diyas are sold in every market before Diwali. Buy a few, and give them with some colours and a brush. Kids can paint them and light them on Diwali night with an adult.
3. Story books
A book about Diwali, or any good story book, is a gift that lasts. Pick a book with big pictures for small kids. For older kids, pick a short chapter book.
4. A board game or puzzle
Cousins and friends come home during Diwali. A board game or a puzzle gives all the kids something to play together. It also keeps them away from the phone for some time.
5. A rangoli set
Kids love to help with rangoli. A small set of rangoli colours, or rangoli stencils, lets them make their own design near the door.
6. A set of animals or space figures to paint
Not every child wants a festival design. Some like animals, space or cartoons more. We have POP painting kits in these designs too. A set with many pieces is good when brothers and sisters want to paint together.

How to choose a Diwali gift for a child
- Check the age. Our painting kits are for kids of 4 years and above. Small kids may need a little help.
- Think about what the child likes. Animals, space, cartoons or gods. Pick the design that fits.
- Pick something they can finish. A small kit that gets done in one sitting is better than a big one left half done.
- Order early. Couriers are busy before Diwali. Order a few days early so the gift reaches in time.
